Traditionally a child with subglottic stenosis would have a tracheostomy to bypass the obstruction. At about 1-2 years the narrowing would be expanded using rib cartilage.

More recently techniques have been developed to avoid tracheostomy. These include single stage techniques and endoscopic techniques
