Subglottic stenosis is a narrowing in the voicebox under the vocal cords. It is usually due to intubation at birth for prematurity. Some cases have never been intubated and are congenital
I have been researching subglottic stenosis for 20 years and have been involved in a number of innovations
Traditionally a child with subglottic stenosis would have a tracheostomy to bypass the obstruction. At about 1-2 years the narrowing would be expanded using rib cartilage.
More recently techniques have been developed to avoid tracheostomy. These include single stage techniques and endoscopic techniques
